Google has indicated through it’s Webmaster’s forum that they are starting to reward those that have secure websites. They are moving towards recognition of those that are providing a safe place for end users to search.
The trend at the moment is that only sites that had payment options were the ones that had HTTPS / SSL before their website address. This was done for security reasons, and it told the consumer that they were safe to purchase off the site.
We are now seeing that sites that have gone the extra step and are providing the extra security feature are being rewarded in local searches. It is an indication to Google that you are willing to put in the time to provide the end user with a better consumer experience.
Being able to go that one step further and provide a consumer with a great experience is one of the characteristics that Google likes to see. It may be seen as being proactive in some instances.
